300 POLITICAL PRISONERS ESCAPE IN FRANCE
(Rec. 11.5 a.m.) PARIS, September 26. Three thousand armed police and special security squads with tommyguns are watching all the main roads leading to the Pyrennees foothills for 73 political prisoners who made a mass escape from the Carrere prison camp, near Agen. It is believed that the men are attempting to enter Spain. They are serving sentences for collaboration with the Nazis.
Police rounded ~up 12 other escapees. The prisoners cut the electricity, overpowered eight warders last night and escaped in cars which apparently, according to a well laid plan, had been left outside the camp after nightfall. * . Police reinforcements arrived in time to prevent the escape of a second wave of about 300 prisoners.
