With The Kiwis— Haig Out: Tourists’ Bad Luck

[N.Z.I’.A. SPECIAL COKBESPONDEXT] (Recd. 9.10 a.m.) LONDON, September 26. When 3. Haig, the New ZeaaLkl Rugby League half-back, who was injured in the game against St Helen’s, had his ankle X-rayed at Leeds Infirmary, it was found that he was suffering from a fracture. He will probably not be able to play again during the tour, at least in England. It is possible he may play in France.

The. New Zealanders were well received by the crowd and the gate of £2500 was a record for the St Helen’s ground. The Yorkshire Post’s correspondent says they did more than expected of them in the opening match. The coach, Mr McClyrnont, said: “I was as surprised as anyone at their splendid [form. I was prepared to make excuses for them af-

ter their sea voyage, if they Jailed to stay the pace, but excuses weie not necessary.” He added that the forwards were o-oing to be a strong force if they could learn to get the ball, but it remained to be seen whether any ol the ■ backs would develop spectacularly. . • After the-match every member ol the team was presented with a drink-

ing glass s ’'engraved with the .New Zealand coat of arms. They are also each receiving a glass water jug and a set of glasses. . . The managers of the team have decided to .make no request that another player be sent-frprri, New Zealand to replace C. Hurndell, the second row forward', who .was taken ill on the voyage and returned to New Zealand from Panama.

Senior Reserve Winners To Meet Tomorrow .

No senior Rugby League games will be played in the Greymouth district tomorrow, but the match at Wingham Park should prove attractive to patrons. It will be between, the West Coast .and Canterbury senor reserve grade champions, Runanga and Christchurch respectively. Another Canterbury team, Dallington, will play the Cobden senior reserve side at the Cobden Domain.

An additional third grade fixture has been arranged, between Brunner and Linwood, to be played at Taylorville at 2.30 p.m.
