Departmental War Histories War histories are being prepared by all Government Departments, and will be the foundation on which Now Zealand civilian war history will be compiled by three authors, Professor B. L. W.'Wood and Messrs J, O. Shearer and Oliver Duff, recently appointed by the Government. The Railways is writing its own history, estimated to use 300,000 words. None of the histories will be published, but will be made available as standard reference sources. In the civilian history political and external affairs, economics, finance and industry, and social developments will be treated. This is not expected to be ready for some years, while it is hoped to complete the- railway history in six months. The development of the service from the first track between Christchurch and Ferrymead, about three miles, with a gauge of sft Sin, will preface the railway history. .
