HIGHER PAY FOR MINE DEPUTIES AND OVERMEN

(Rec. 12.3 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 25.

The conference of the National Association of Colliery, Overmen, Deputies and Shotfirers who on September 12 gave the National Coal Board notice of the termination of its contract but later agreed to negotiate, decided to accept a provisional offer from the board of wage increases for deputies and overmen. An official said the increases represented an annual cost to the board of £2,500,000. Notice was originally given because the overmen claimed they were excluded from the benefits of the five-day week, though the deputies and' shotfirers were not. The conference decided to accept the board’s offer, despite the fears which the executive expressed that the shotfirers would not like it.”
