LATE NEWS DEADLOCK ON QUESTION OF MINING HOURS
(Recd. 3 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 25. It is understood that the Minister of Fuel, Mr Shinwell made a report to the Cabinet meeting today on the failure to reach an agreement with the coal-miners on how extra overtime which the Government had requested, should be worked, says Reuters. The Ministers adhere to the view that the best method would be for miners to work an extra halfhour daily rather than work a Saturday shift, which is apt to be spoilt by absenteeism. The Cabinet expressed the hope that both sides of the industry, when considering wage claims, would bear in mind the Cabinet’s opinion. General increases must be avoided owing to the danger of.inflation. The Cabinet made no decision about presenting an Autumn budget. BRITAIN’S STRONG NOTE TO BULGARIA (Rec. 3 p.m.) LONDON, September 25. The British Government sent a strong note to Bulgaria protesting against the execution on September 22 of Mr Petkov, former leader of the opposition Agrarian Party. A Foreign Office spokesman announced this today. He refused to reveal the details but it is understood, says Reuters, taht the note does not announce the severance of diplomatic relations.
