THREAT TO FAMILY LIFE

(Rec. 2 p.m.) LONDON, September 24.

Modern conditions threatened family life as it had not been threatened for centuries, said the Archbishop of York, Dr Garbett, speaking at Hull. Among the reasons why married couples wished to avoid having children were high taxes, rising cost of living and the lack of domestic help.

Dr Garbett said he hoped the Government would not encourage mothers with young children to take employment, even at the present stage of the labour shortage. .A woman in bearing children and giving them and their father a happy, contented home life was rendering more valuable service to the State than by working all day in a factory.
