Paper From West Coast Timbers: Syndicate’s Plans
(0.C.) HOKITIKA, This Day. The compilation of data and reports on the processing of West Coast timbers has proceeded so far that the Westland Wood Pulp and Products Syndicate has applied to the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Nordmeyer) for a licence to establish such an industry in the vicinity of Hokitika.
This decision was made prior to the Government’s announcement of its intention to manufacture pulp and paper in the North Island. Favourable reports from overseas •experts and draft plans of a mill are on hand. The .syndicate also has specimens of news print and pulp made overseas from West Coast timbers. The syndicate proposes, if granted a licence, to float a public company to develop the industry and it envisages also test-pulping, for industrial purposes, of flax, gorse and other materials. It is not proposed to pulp timber suitable for building purposes, but waste material only and a replenishing scheme'is incorporated in the proP oSalS< . -n It is considered that if the proposals develop as planned the industry will become one of the largest undertakings on the West Coast.
