SWIMMING WEST COAST CENTRE PLANS FOR SEASON

The West Coast centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association had enjoyed a most successful season, and in some respects it was the best for years, said Mr W. S. McClymont, secretary, in presenting his report at the annual meeing of the centre which was held last evening.

“The Centre has had the best season for years financially, for two reasons, the outstanding success of the centre’s championships which were held at Runanga, and donations received from officers and honorary members,” said Mr McClymont. The secretary’s report and balance sheet, which showed a considerable profit, were received.

The honorary educational officer. Air R. K. Holmes, reported that, particularly in the latter part of the season, good swimming weather - had prevailed and this had been reflected in the amount of educational work that had been accomplished. Mr Holmes said that 632 certificates had been issued to school children which showed an increasing interest on. the part of children and teachers in swimming. “One case is meritorious,” said Mr Holmes. “A boy, crippled in one arm and one leg, was not only taught, to swing, but perservered until he gained his certificate for 33 1-3 yards.” Election Of Officers The following officers were elected for - the ensuing season: Patron, Mr E. McDonnell; president, Mr ]VI. R. Bunt; vice-presidents, Messrs W. August. F. W. Baillie, F. Costello, D. Dowell, R, K, Holmes, D. Gillespie, D. H. Manderson, W. M. Messrs M. R. Bunt and W. S. McClymont were appointed delegates to represent the West Coast centre at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association which will be held in Christchurch on Labour week-end. Messrs F. Costello and N. Jones were appointed delegates to the West. Coast Council of Sport and Mr G. Ormandy was elected secretary of the coaching committee.

Mr J. Mclnroe was delegated to request- the Greymouth Operatic Society that its next performance be presented on behalf of the Swimming Centre.

Film Projector

Advice was received from the New Zealand Association stating that a talkie projector was an essential item for all centres. A sub-committee comprising Messrs M. R. Bunt, R. K; Holmes and W. S. McClymont, was set up to go into the matter of obtaining suitable films. Mr Bunt said that a certain sum should be set aside for the purpose of purchasing a projector. On the motion of Mr CosteTlo it was decided that £25 should be set aside for the purpose. “It is a seller’s market today and in time prices will come down,” said Mr G. Ormandy. Mr Holmes’s offer of the loan of his projector in the meantime was accepted and he was given full authority to procure any suitable films. Arrangements for the screening of the films were left in the hands of the sub-committee. National Savings Increased It was decided that the centre’s National Savings account should be increased to £lOOO, the necessary amount to be transferred from the building fund. Outstanding accounts amounting to £7 10s were passed for payment. Mr Bunt said that the surf club required active members. “It is pointed out that the club is very financial but has no active members,” said Mr Bunt, “and I would request delegates to bring the matter up at their respective club meetings.” Any action taken by clubs to assist the .surf club would have the centre’s approval, he concluded. Remit Submitted

“The standard of diving in this centre is lamentably low.” said the secretary (Mr McClymont) and he recommended that members who had the good of diving at heart should take every opportunity to watch as many high-class divers as possible and to prepare for the examination for membership on the New Zealand diving judges’ panel. “On the West Coast there are only two men on the panel when there should be at least three,” continued Mr McClymont (who then submitted that a resolution, to the effect that applicants for the diving judges examination be recommended by the centre in which the applicants" live, should be moved by the delegates at the New Zealand Association’s annual meeting. His suggestion was adopted.
