AMERICAN PROTEST TO JUGOSLAVIA

WASHINGTON, Sept. 12.

The State Department announced today that the United States had protested vigorously to Jugoslavia against the “unwarranted detention and maltreatment” of British and American soldiers and sailors.

The department said that the Jugoslav authorities were still detaining seven British officers and men and one American officer and one enlisted man. Their immediate release had been demanded. Five members of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, who were seized in June and detained for four days, had been maltreated. It is understood that the British Foreign Office is making a similar protest. . ■ ■■■■■
