BRITISH CABINET CHANGES HELD TO BE NECESSARY

fN.Z.P.A. SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT] LONDON, Sept. 1.

The Manchester Guardian says: “Mr Attlee must realise by now that he must recall Parliament and face it with a stronger and more united team. There are Ministers like Dr Dalton, Mr Shinwell, and Mr Isaacs whose continuance in their offices has become a confession of weakness.

“If the Government could forget for a moment its exaggerated fear of rebels in the Parliamentary Labour Party and the trade unions, and act as it thinks best without fear or favour, it will win the support of the great majority not only of the Labour Party but of the country. The British people have alway/s respected courage. They can have no respect for a Government which edges up to a crisis like a nervous rider trying to saddle a dangerous horse. The Government should get on and ride.” The Economist described last week’s austerity announcements as “another mouse” and said: “So far as. the workers are concerned, the Government is still tinkering with the crisis; it is the middle classes' who get the tinker’s curse.” To a number of other newspaper opinions on similar lines has now been added the unexpected voice of the Socialist weekly, the Tribune, formerly edited by the Minister of Health (Mr Aneurin Bevan). It says: “Though the country has not turned away from the Labour Government towards the Opposition, it is evident that there have been moments of acute disappointment, regret, and even despair among the Government’s .most loyal supporters. Moreover, not only has it become evident that there are pronounced weaknesses in the Government, but there is a growing feeling that its whole structure must be radica y changed if it is to act with the singlemindedness and energy demanded by the crisis?’
