It was stated on behalf- of the anion today that the members considered that where a situation developed of sufficient gravity to warrant the suggestion of strike action, it was only right that everyone concerned should exercise the right to his opinion without an attempt at coercion by anyone. The national ' secretary . of the union, Mr F. Craig, said the union’s national executive endorsed this view. The Timber Workers’ Union is only the second Auckland union ;v--;lliated with the Federation of Labour to support the Government’s proosal. It was reported in Wellington this afternoon that at a largely-attended meeting of seamen in Auckland there were only six dissentients to a resolution favouring the principle of secret ballots. AUSTRALIA WOULD NOT CLAIM FORFEIT IN DAVIS CUP GAME ■ (Rec. 3 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept.. 1. Had Australia been prepared to apply the full rigour of the Davis Clip regulations the score would have been two matches to one in her favour, instead of two to one against, when the final day’s play began today. The presence of a masseur on the court during the fourth .set pl' Schroeder’s match against Bromwich on Saturday was a breach on which Australia could have claimed a forfeit. In fact, Dr Russell Davenport, the referee, apologised to the Australian captain, Roy Cowling, after the match for his failure to realise the illegality of the presence of the masseur, who briefly treated Schroeder’s cramped right arm in the concluding stages, and twice urged him to claim a“ forfeit. Cowling firmly refused, saying it would be an unsportsmanlike method of winning. Senior American officials were distressed by the incident, especially as it was at America’s insistence many years ago, after the French had been bringing masseurs on to the court, that the rule was incorporated.
