/p A ) AUCKLAND, Sept. 2. Selection of Mr C. J. Garland, of Auckland, as National Partjv candidate for the by-election to fill the Mount Albert seat, made vacant by the death of Mr A. S. Richards was made at a meeting of the party delegates. He is a son of the Rev. C. H. Garland, formerly of the Pitt street Methodist Church. Mr Garland is a solicitor. ,He_was born in New Plymouth 48 years ago. He won the New Zealand championship debating medal, later leading an Auckland team against a touring debating team representing Oxford University. He was an Auckland hockey representative and a founder of the Thames Valley Lawn Tennis Association. Mr Garland was a member of the Thames Borough Council before coming to. Auckland. He is a former member of the Auckland City Council, Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board, and Auckland University College Council.
