BOXING WEST COAST MEN COMPETE AT TEMUKA TOURNAMENT
A tournament was held at Temuka on Saturday night, boxers from Invercargill,. Dunedin, Waimate, Timaru, Temuka, Ashburton, Lyttelton and West Coast taking part. The boxing; generally was of a high standard, particularly the six-round bout between M. Tuck (West Coast) and R. McDonald (Waimate). Tuck gave a first class exhibition and impressed good judges as being a strong contender for N.Z, championship honours this year. The results of bouts in which West Coast boys took part were as follows:—
V. Tuck, 8.13, defeated Glozier, 8.6 (Invercargill) on points; Tuck being too strong and experienced for his Southland opponent. J. Finlay, 8.6, defeated D. Lewis, 8.1 (Waimate), on points. Finlay was too fast-for Lewis who tried to fight in close all the way. Lewis was sent to the floor with a hard right in the second round, but rose without taking a count. B. Eder, 9.6, won by a t.k.o. over B. Wilson, 9.8 (Inv.ercargill), in the fourth round of a scheduled six round bout. This contest was lively and had • the crowd very excited. Eder was knocked out of the ring in the first round and it seemed Wilson would win very easily. Eder, however, displayed great stamina and punching power and literally punched his way to victory. He floored Wilson twice in the fourth*round ( when the referee stopped the bout in favour of Eder.
M. Tuck, 10.7, won on points from R. McDonald, 11.0 (of Waimate). Tuck was fast and cool and too strong for the Waimate boy who took a good deal of punishment. McDonald was game and strong and he made a great effort to win by a k.o. in the last round, but Tuck evaded his blows by smart footwork.
In a tournament at Westport on Saturday, W. Underhay,' the Canterbury featherweight champion, was no match for the Westport boxer,* J. Porter, in a most, disappointing bout. Canterbury boxers won other bouts as follows: J. Tagelagi beat A. Hawes on points, F. Butterworth beat J. Stuart on a technical knock-out in the first round, B. Shaw, beat A. Kitto on points and G. Shaw beat Burrows on points. •
