Shannon Defeated In Warwick Stakes At Sydney SYDNEY, August 31. The greatest surprise in recent Australian turf history was the failure of the champion Shannon to win the Warwick Stakes at Randwick yesterday. It was his first start since Mr W. J. Smith bought him for 26,000 guineas. Usually a slow beginner, Shannon was so fresh that he reversed his tactics. His jockey, D. Munro, had trouble in holding him back and he was never further back than third.

From the first furlong Shannon settled down just behind Shading and Prince Consort, with Virago following and Victory Lad running easily in the centre of the field. Shannon hit the front at the two furlongs, when Victory Lad also challenged. Much to everyone’s surprise, Shannon twice turned his head and tried to savage Prince Consort. In controlling him, Munro lost his whip. Meanwhile Victory Lad raced down the centre of the track and had the race won. Shannon still had his chance in the last furlong, but on the day was not good enough. In the Hobartville Stakes, Sydney’s champion three-year-old, Temeraire, scored easily over a small field. He ran the first three furlongs in 331 sec, and the first half-mile in 47sec, when he was 12 lengths clear. Results:—
