BASKETBALL CANTERBURY WINS A GRADE AT N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS

The winners of the three grades at the Dominion basketball championships at Nelson, Canterbury, Tauranga, and Nelson respectively, each went through- the . tournament unbeaten. Canterbury, with 14 points, won the New Zealand Cup', and Auckland, with 10 points, took the Annie Brown Cup for the runner-up. These teams were followed by Manawatu 8, Hawke’s Bay 6, Otago 4, Southland 4, Wanganui 3, and Wellington 3. The B grade winers, Tauranga, hold the President’s Shield, while Waikato, the runner-up, becomes the new holder of the Hayhurst Cup. Nelson won. the Kiwi trophy for the third grade. The runner-up, Marlborough, will hold the Armstrong Shield. At the conclusion of‘the tournament teams representing the North Island and the South Island met in a keenly contested match, which' resulted in a win for the North Island by 17 goals lo 12.

Saturday’s results were:— A Grade.— Canterbury 34, Wellington 18; Hawke’s Bay 30, Wanganui 24; Auckland 24, Manawatu 19; Southland 20, Otago 13. B Grade. —Taurahga 35, Horowhenua 13; Waikato 26, Horowhenua 12. C. Grade. —Nelson 2'7, Marlborough 19; Marlborough 19, West Coast 12. New Zealand Team The New Zealand Basketball Association announced yesterday that the following New Zealand team has been selected to play Australia in Dunedin in the first test in August next year:— lA wards: M. Sullivan (Auckland), N Nicholls (Nelson), A. Hughes (Canterbury), P. Johnson, Tauranga). Centres: D. Turner (Canterbury), O. Murray (Canterbury), J. Williams (Wellington), L. Johnston (Otago). Defenders: J. Hickey (Auckland), L. Black (Canterbury), N. Baxter (Auckland), D. Cockerton (Matamata). Reserves: B. Avery (Wellington), B. Bridgland (Hawke’s Bay), A. Clark (Canterbury), I. Jennings Southland), M. Leask (Manawatu), C. Thompson (Auckland), L. McCann (Hawke’s Bay), M. Barrett (Canterbury), and F. Eglinton (Manawatu).
