Women's Institutes

Kumara -., , Mrs J. Gibson presided over the monthly meeting ‘of the Kumara Women’s. Institute recently when one hew member was .welcomed. The roll-call “Exchange df Plants” proved successful. Mrs Reedy read the golden thread “Milford Sound.” ■ . Letters were received by Mrs. Gibson, from the'Dominion president and Mrs A. J. Dillon (lone, member).' It was agreed to pay £1 a year for five years towards the Dominion headquarters building fund. Two members were delegated to buy a food parcel which will be sent to the institute’s link in Britain. The mystery parcel ..presented by Mrs Ollerenshaw was won by Mrs Evenden. Competition results were:—Tray cloth, Mrs Murphy; best bloom, Mrs Reedy Ist, Mrs Evenden 2nd, Mrs Pool 3rd;'best feeder, Mrs Dillon Ist, Mrs Evenden 2nd, Mrs Fitzpatrick 3rd. There were several , entries in. this competition and all feeders will be presented to the children’s ward at the Grey Hospital.

Reefton . ' . Mrs R. Yellowlees presided at the August meeting of the Reefton Women’s Institute. The McElwee family were accorded the sympathy of members in the.death of Mr. John McElwee. Arrangements were completed for members to take part in a Group Travel party. A letter of thanks was received from the Institute link, in Britain for gift food parcels, and a book was received showing the work of Englishwomen's Institutes.

Mrs Lockington was thanked for her demonstration on “-high-pressure cooking”. Mr Allen gave a demonstration of wool spinning and was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs N. Bolitho won the social half-hour competition. The monthly competition winners were:—Bloom, Mesdames Yellowlees and Smith equal 1; Mrs Archer 2. Bag article, Mrs Hinton 1, Mesdames Eklund and Eager equal 2. Karoro

Mrs Dodd presided over the monthly meeting of the Karoro W.I. held recently, when there was an attendance of 18 members and visitors. A letter from the Dominion President was read by Mrs Evenden. Mrs Hazeldine supplied the motto for the month and a social half-hour was given by Mrs Wildermoth. An applique demonstration was given by Mrs Thompson. Mrs Timlin spoke on institute work. A collection was made foi’ the “Cake for Britain.” Mesdames Bradley and Mosley were appointed sick visitors. Competition winners were.—Bloom: Mrs Bradley 1, Mesdames Ellery and Mosley 2 equal; article: Mrs Evenden 1, Mrs Murray 2, Mrs Banett 3; baking, Mrs Mosley 1, Mrs Murray 2, Mrs Robertson 3. > Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses and the singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting.

Wedding Johnston-Baxenda I e The wedding took place recently at Holy Trinity Church, Greymouth, of Freda Margaret, only daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Baxendale, Runanga, and Peter Norman, youngest son of Mr and Mrs N. Johnston, Kaikoh'e, North Auckland. The Rev. K. G. Aubrey officiated.

The bride, who was escorted by her father, more a ,gown of ivory satin, with heart-shaped neckline and longfitting bodice and fluted peplum, the skirt forming a full train. Her veil was held in place with a coronet of orange blossom and she carried a bouquet of white chrysantthemums and maidenhair fern. The bride’s attendants were Miss Heather Burrows as chief bridesmaid, and Mrs Olga Dunn, as matron of honour, who were frocked alike in blue and pink hailstone - organdie respectively. The flower girl was Elizabeth Adamson in blue similar to the bridesmaids. Their bouquets were anemones'and maiden-hair fern, with sprays ofi flowers in their hair.

Mr Ron Baxendale was best rfian. and Mr F. Burrows, groomsman. During, the signing of the register Mrs Johnston, the bridegroom’s mother, sang “I’ll Walk Beside You.” A reception was held at Harker’s where the guests'were received by the bride’s mother, assisted by the mother of the bridegroom. Mrs Baxendale wore a brown model frock and hat with brown accessories, and a shoulder’ spray of lemon freesias. Mrs Johnston wore a model frock of dusky pink under a fur coat, with

brown accessories, and a shoulder spray of cyclamen. Mr and Mrs P. N. Johnston left later by car, the bride travelling in a blue frock under a wine coat with wine accessories. Their future home will be at Kaikohe, North Auckland.
