The Greymouth branch of the National Council of Women at a meeting held in St John’s'Hall recently unanimously support a proposal for an increase in old-age pensions, but added a rider to the effect, that “the real trouble lies in the high cost of living and the only logical way for the Government to deal with this problem is to reduce the cost of living.” The resignation of Mrs Evans, a foundation member and, until her resignation, president of the branch since its inception, was accepted with regret. Mrs Mann was appointed to replace Mrs Evans as N.C.W. representative on the War Memorial Committee and Mrs Coumbes was elected vice-president. As the expense prevented a representative travelling from New Zealand attending the international conference at Philadelphia, the appointment of Lady Berendsen to represent New Zealand was approved. The subjects selected for this year’s study were: “Child Welfare” and “Broadcasting” and it was decided to set up committees convened by Mesdames Mann and Fogarty to prepare material for discussion. .
