CONTROL OF COAST STREAMS: VIEWS OF LOCAL BODIES

The control of all streams or water courses, natural as well as artificial, on the province was discussed when representatives of all West Coast local bodies, including the Inangahua and Westland County Councils, met at Greymouth this week at the invitation of the Westland Catchment Board.

The chairman of the board, Mr F. F. Boustridge, explained the intention of the board to seek a vesting order placing the control of all streams in its hands, and thus facilitate the handling of erosion problems, and suggested that local bodies indicate the streams in their respective territories that they required to retain. While some bodies had no objection to a blanket vesting order as far as their areas were concerned, others indicated that there were some streams which it was desired to have excluded from the order, and the meeting decided that to settle the matter the executive of the board visit each individual local body and ascertain its requirements.
