N.Z. CONFERENCE ON AID FOR BRITAIN CALLED

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 13. A conference convened by the Government will be held on Wednesday and Thursday of next week to consider all means by which Britain may be helped in her present economic crisis. This was announced this evening in the House of Representatives by the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser), who added that the discussions of the conference would cover the complete range of .subjects concerned with aid to Britain, such as problems of production for export, transport and shipping, imports, food rationing, food parcels, and other related matters. Invitations issued

The conference, for which invitations are now being issued, will be opened in the social hall of Parliament Buildings with short addresses by the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland), and Mr E. T. Tirikatene, representing the Maori people. The people invited would be representative of the entire community, said Mr Fraser, and would include workers and employers’ organisations, export producers and importers, local and public bodies, former servicemen’s associations, social, educational, and women’s organisations, the churches, leaders of the present “Food for Britain Campaign,” and others. Mr Holland’s Suggestion

Mr Fraser said the Government was already in communication with the British Government, and the suggestion had been put forward by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland) that representatives of the Government and Opposition should visit the United Kingdom to find out exactly what New Zealand could do. Mr Fraser said he would like to discuss the matter further, but personally he thought the suggestion was well worth while. He could say no more about it at the moment, except that it was a very good suggestion. Mr Holland said he had discussed his suggestion with the Prime Minister on the train during his journey back from Auckland last week. His colleagues supported entirely the proposition put forward by the Prime Minister. The Government could rest assured that that the Opposition would do everything it could to make the conference a success.
