MacArthur May Attend Japanese Peace Talks
(Recd. 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 12
A forecast that General MacArthur may return to the United States from Tokio for the Japanese peace treaty conference in September was made today by the New York Herald-Tri-bune. Diplomatic sources believe that General MacArthur would want to give the conferees the benefit of his experience as Supreme Allied Commander in Japan. War Department officials said such a move would be “strictly up to MacArthur himself.” General MacArthur is the only major military figure of the Second World War who has not returned to America since hostilities ended.
