FRUIT INDUSTRY SEEKS INCREASE IN APPLE EXPORTS
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Fruitgrowers’ Federation, at its conference today, passed a resoluton urging that every effort be made to export as many apples as possible, especially to the United Kingdom, and also that there be an increase in the bonus. It was maintained that the present bonus did not encourage the packing of fruit for exp.ort, which entailed extra labour and costs. Another remit stated that in view of the continued increase in private sales of apples and pears the Fruit Council should be empowered to take such steps as might be necessary to prevent such sales from becoming a danger to the successful functioning of pip fruit marketing scheme. More drastic steps to suppress black marketing were also urged. The conference asked for the ceiling prices to be raised to cover the cost of production and marketing of pip fruits and for consideration of an increase in the stabilised price of apples. It was urged that growers should receive from early pip f ru a price more in conformity with market values and that the Fruit Marketing Council should make every endeavour to sell direct to the consumer. ..
