CABLE BREVITIES 4½-Day Week Claim By Australian Union

The Pastrycooks’ Union asked Mr Justice de Baun in the Industrial Commission today for a four-and-a-half-day week for workers in biscuit factories. A union official said in evidence that the application was being made to give employees time to do their shopping on Friday afternoons, and that three firms had already agreed to the application. The industry now works a five-day week. The union is asking that the hours of work should be from 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, with 1.30 p.m. closing on Friday. “You are not likely to get married women back into the industry rintil you make things better for them in the home,” said the Judge, in reserving judgment. He was replying to a contention by the union that at the recent Canberra conference, it was stated that increased production could only be obtained if married women were returned to industry.—Sydney, August 11.

Kon Tiki Raft Expedition The Kon Tiki raft expedition ended its journey on the Raroia reef, in the Tuamotii Islands, when after three days of trying to get round the reef the expedition was finally drawn on to the coral reef, where the raft grounded.
