Judge Pays High Tribute To The West Coast

High tributes to the natural wealth of the West Coast and to the character of its people were paid by His Honor, Mr Justice Fleming, at the Opening, of the Supreme Court session at Greymouth today. His Honor’s remarks were made in reply to the traditional presentation by the Sheriff (Mr L. Cutler) of a pair of white gloves, signifying that there were no criminal cases for hearing. “Thank you, Mr Sheriff, and the members of the Law Society, for your symbolic gift—symbolic of the freedom from serious crime of this Westland district,” said His Honor. “I have had the opportunity during my first short visit here in a judicial capacity of seeing a good portion of the district and of witnessing the wondrous beauties and gifts with which nature has so profusely blessed this district —gifts not to be won without toil and application—and it is not surprising to find the people industrious and hard working. I note also the concomitant virtues of geniality and respect for the law. I heartly congratulate the district on its freedom from crime. “My coming here brings to mind some of the great men this district has produced, statesmen and professional men. I remember, too, the famous story of the Calliope steaming out in the teeth of the gale impelled by your good Westport coal. I trust, Mr Sheriff and gentlemen, that your district will continue to prosper and to preserve its high distinction of freedom from crime of a serious nature, concluded His Honor.
