PROBLEM OF DEALING WITH BIG FIELDS

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 11. The problem of coping with big fields had long exercised'the minds of those in authority, said the chairman of stipendiary stewards (Mi- C. Gomer), in his report to the annual mooting of the New Zealand Racing Conference today. Balloting had not been universally popular and some clubs had. tried to solve the problem by restrictions of various types in their programmes. So far no method had been a complete success. In spite of the threat of a strike by jockeys on one or two occasions, the safety numbers on big courses were reasonable, continued Mr Gomer, but on smaller courses trouble might arise in future. The declaration of barrier positions before race day might reduce fields to some extent, but it was doubtful whether it would work with the same effect in maiden or hack classes. A system of eligibility on stake earnings had been suggested, but that would most likely reduce fields at the bigger meetings only, where the field problem was not so bad. A method of elimination that might

be worthy of trial would be the exclusion from all races of horses which had raced without a win for two seasons in other than jumping and high-weight events.
