SPORTING SENSATIONAL CONTEST IN HAWKERS BAY CUP

The consistent Langue d’Or narrowly won the Hawke’s Bay Cup after a sensational contest on the first day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey, Club’s meeting at Hastings on Saturday. Running out of the straight with three furlongs covered, Matador slipped and fell in a bunched field, and Dark Morning, Night Foe and Capronella were brought down. Several other runners had their chances prejudiced, one being the favourite, Blanket, whose rider, W. L. Aitken, lost his irons. A few yards from the finish, Arco, under a hard ride, bored in on Blanket, and Aitken had the greatest difficulty in maintaining his seat. Inquiries were held into the occurrences, and both were found to be accidental, no blame being attachable to any rider or runner. Leased to Coast

He improved crossing the top and was equal fourth turning for. home. He failed to carry on in the run home, and finished seventh.

Impressive Winners Features of the Te Ar oh a Jockey Club’s mid-autumn meeting on Saturday were the return to form of Hippodrome, who won the main event, the President’s Handicap, and the effortless win of Knight Templar, who scored a” runaway victory in the Ngarua Handicap. Hippodrome was always well placed and he finished strongly in the straight to beat the favourite, Swift Quarry, and Gold Dash. Knight Templar smothered his opposition for speed in the open sprint, nothing else looking dangerous in the last furlong.
