WAVELL BIDS FAREWELL TO INDIA
(Recd. 11.30 a.m.) - NEW DELHI, March 21. The retiring Viceroy, Lord Wavell, broadcasting a farewell to the people of India, said' the stability of the Indiari army might be the deciding factor in India’s future. It had shown how all the communities could work together to meet a common danger. ’ “You have hard, dangerous and ' difficult years ahead, but you will overcome them,” he said. “I am conscious of the mistakes I have made. I always tried to work for , the welfare of India’s inhabitants and for India’s advancement' towards self-rule.” He added that his successor, Viscount Mountbatten, was a great leader in war and an ardent supporter of progress.
