SPORTING Conza Team Won £1584 In Eight Days’ Racing

The Te Arolia trainer, M.’Conza, formerly of Greymouth and Rieearton, was easily the most successful mentor on the West Coast circuit which concluded at Reefton on Saturday. Horses trained by him won 12 races and recorded two seconds and eight thirds in eight days’ racing between. February 8 and March 15, for a total of £1,584/10/- in. stakes.

It was a notable record and his horses well, and to keep them, hard tracks.

Of Conza’s team of eight, six won races, and more success might have been credited to him but for an unfortunate mishap to one of the stars of his team, Sitology, a daughter of Skyrena, who received injuries after her first start (a win) and was unable to start again on the circuit. The Silver Stick four-year-old, Vonettee, trained by Conza for Mr A. E. Graeff, was the most successful, winning three races, and being once second and three times third for £492 in stakes. Then came Glamis Pal, with four wins and a third and £412 10s in stakes; Race Lad, two wins, a second, and four thirds and £300; St Nat, one win and £150; Home Again, one win in only one start, £130; and Sitology, one win in only one start, £lOO. The team will race next at the Nelson J.C. meeting, and will then return to Te Aroha, probably via Napier, racing at suitable meetings en route.

Certainty Beaten Ben Ledi, who was a hot favourite for the Wyndham Cup, appeared to be a certainty beaten. He lost fully 100 yards at the start and then finished in third place within three lengths of the winner. He will not be discarded for this failure.

Overdue Win Leonin, who won the Wyndham Cup on Saturday, did not win out of turn. His previous win was at the corresponding meeting last when he won over a mile and five

a credit to Conza’s ability to get right throughout a campaign on

furlongs. Leonin is a six-year-old by Jack Potts from the Matchlight mare Lady Effie, thus a brother to Three Tens. f Promising Pacer The Gamble four-year-old mare Wynleaf attracted attention by her strong finishing run into third place behind Sowden Beck and Calando in the Waiuta Trot Handicap at Reefton on Saturday. Messrs R. and R. G. Powell should not have to wait long for success. Trentham Winner Broiefield was got by Broiefort — Snowfield, by Lackham —Snowshoe, by Kilbroney—Snowstell, by Clanranald —Safeguard, by Maxim—Toredo, by Apremont—Nautilus, by Traducer. Broiefort, who was got by -Blandford, was bred in France, and the names in his pedigree are foreign to New Zealanders. Disappointing Races The Wyndham Cup and Juvenile Stakes, the two principal events at the Wyndham Trotting Club’s, annual meeting, both resulted in disappointing contests because of the dawdling pace that was set. In the Wyndham Cup the leaders took 2min 19 3-ssec to run the first mile, 3min 26sec for the mile and a half, and 4min 32sec for the full journey, the last halfmile in Imin 6sec. The Juvenile Stakes was an even worse case of loitering, and the race developed into little more than a sprint home. The first mile took 2min 27sec.
