The Ministry of Labour figures for 1946, issued when the fuel emergency is forcing thousands into'unemployment, illustrate Britain’s great effort before the emergency to earn a favourable export and import balance. The number of people producing for export in 1946 exceeded by 48 per cent, the number so engaged in. the middle of 1939. Britain’s industry as a whole employed at the end. of 1946 a total of 18 033,000, compared with 17,327,000 in June, 16,289,000 at the end of the war in 1945, and 17,920,000 in the middle of 1939. —London, Feb. 13,
