FORTY-HOUR WEEK

AUSTRALIAN DEMAND PRESSED ONE-DAY STRIKE THREAT (Rec. 11.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The Trades Hall Council adjourn- : ed lor a fortnight a motion to endorse a proposal by the Australasian Council of Trades Unions for a 24hour Australia-wide strike on May 1, if a 40-hour week is not granted by that date. The adjournment was narrowly carried, the voting being 90 for and 88 against. “If the council does not give unionists an opportunity to say whether they want to strike, how can it expect loyalty from the workers?” said the secretary of the Storemen and Packers’ Union, Mr. A. A. Kyle. A council representative said that the reason for asking State branches to consider a strike was to see how far it could be applied. The Arbitration Court would be told when the 40-hour week application was resumed that the trade union movement wanted the basic wage claim to stand apart.
