GENERAL NEWS SHILLING A PAIR FOR RABBIT EARS

The East Coast Rabbit Board, Poverty Bay, has decided to offer a bonus of one shilling a pair for rabbits’ ears to stimulate a drive to exterminate the pest in a heavilyinfested area of the district. The bonus will be payable to board employees and also to ratepayers and their employees for rabbits killed in the board’s district in February, March and April.—(P.A.)

Rapahoe Hold-up. “I cannot make any comment at this stage, other than that exhaustive inquiries are still being made,” said the Inspector of Police at Greymouth, Mr. M. J. Angland, to-day, when asked whether any developments had occurred in regard to the hold-up at the Rapahoe Hotel early yesterday morning.

Stockton Open-cast Mining. Extensive boring is being carried out in the Stockton coal field, and preparations are being made for an extension of open-cast mining operaations. It is intended to blast a considerable area, of overburden before sluicing it off the coal*-. Previously the overburden was cleared away by electric shovels, but it is now thought that sluicing will be a better method.

Building Activity. Permits for buildings issued by the Greymouth Borough Council indicate that, despite the difficulties caused through shortages of materials and labour, building activities at Greymouth are on the increase. With two months of the current financial year yet to be included, 124 building permits for work totalling over £47,000 have been issued this year, as compared with 116 permits for work valued at £37,285 during the year ended March 31, 1946. Last month, eight permits were issued, for work valued at £4505.

Concert Pianist’s Visit. Colin Horsley, the young Wanga-nui-born concert pianist, who has achieved outstanding success in British concert recitals, is to revisit New Zealand. He will leave England m April or May, and expects to give 12 broadcasts, with recitals in Wanganui, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. He will leave New Zealand for a series of concerts in Australia, and will gi ve a New York recital on his way back to England.—(P.A.) Art Exhibition at Greymouth. An exhibition of the works of -he late David Hutton in water colours and oil is being sponsored by Misses S and K. Hutton and Mrs. Biggins, of Christchurch, in the Greymouth Town Hall. The exhibition, which will continue until February 24, was opened by the Mayor (Mr. F. A. Kitchingham), who said that it would be an encouragement to the artistic element in the town and district, and provide an incentive for local artists. The standard of the late Mr. Hutton s work was exceptionally high in all fields and a credit to his talent and his perseverance. There was a good attendance at the opening and Greymouth residents have shown increasing interest in the exhibition.

National Savings For the week ended on Saturday last National Savings investments equalling or exceeding the weekly ouotas were recorded in 302 otit ot the 335 quota areas. All the principal centres were successful and with the aid of surpluses recorded at many places all district objectives for the week were fully attained. Further successes in the attainment of the full annual quotas were recorded during the week, the latest places to achieve this being Tauranga (in the Thames . district), Wellsford (Auckland district) and Rangataua and Waitotara (Wanganui district). In the Wanganui postal district all the local annual objectives have now been attained, this being the first-postal district in the North Island to record this accomplishment. Of the lour principal cities Dunedin has the most enviable record for the current financial year, the investments to date in that centre amounting to more than double the full year’s quota.

Gifts to Hospital. . The Grey Hospital Board at its meeting last evening recorded its appreciation of a donation to the hospital by Mr. Dennehy, of Barrytown, of a special rotary bed, and of a gift by Mr. J. G. Quinn, of Dobson. Thanks were also extended to the following: Mrs. Dyeming, books and magazines; Kenny Smith, books; Greymouth Club £5; annonymous 6/-; Rotary Club £10; and Wallsend Miners, £3 for the children’s Ward; Mrs. Davies, Marsden road for linen; Mrs. G. Hahn, Mrs. Coombes, Mrs. Truman and others flowers; the Pipe Band and Salvation Army, for entertaining patients; and Mr. L. McGlashan for acting as Father Christmas on Christmas Day and Miss Jill Bluett for assisting him. Mr. Hopkins, the men of St. John Ambulance Association and the women of Friends of Hospitals Society, and those who assisted the nursing staff through the year, were' also thanked.
