THE WAGES TAX
REMOVAL OF SIXPENCE IN MAY EMERGENCY LEGISLATION (P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 11. The removal of the remaining sixpence in the £ national security tax early in May, as promised by the Prime Minister (Mr. P. Fraser) during the General Election, would be. done by emergency legislation, according to the Minister of Finance (Mr. W. Nash), who has returned from'Sydney by flying-boat. This was being done because the new Parliament would not sit until June, added Mr. Nash. Although it was not necessary to do so, the removal of the tax would be ratified later in the session. There would be a Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill, and the chances were that ratification of the abolition of the national security tax would be made at the same time. ■ Mr. Nash will spend only a short time in New Zealand before going to the Empire trade conference, which' will open in London on March 11, preparatory to the world trade conference at Geneva on April 7.
