SPORTING Chellow Dene Finished Impressively

A welcome return to form was shown by Chellow Dene at Omoto last Saturday, and the Solicitor General—Folk Lore gelding was rather unlucky to get no better than third in the Stewards’ Handicap after his splendid finishing burst. Chellow Dene gave an impressive display when he started for the first time at Hokitika early this, year and won over six furlongs in 1.15 1-5. On the strength of this performance he was well supported in his two engagements at Reefton the following Saturday, but failed to reproduce his winning form. In both races he had every chance but failed to carry on over the final furlong. Though top-weight in a field of seven last Saturday, Chellow Dene was made third favourite. He failed to obtain a good position before the field had settled down and after two furlongs was behind the bunch and just in front of Wise Girl, which was tailing off. His position had not been improved at the bottom turn and in the final run for the post he was set a hard task to catch the leaders, Legal Rose and Palomino, which were almost on terms. However, he finished on the outside faster than either, and was inches behind Legal Rose as they passed the post. Palomino just managed to get up in the last couple of strides after having taken advantage of a run on the rails.

The time for the race, 1.27, was little outside the course record, and on the strength of his performance Chellow Dene may warrant more attention when next he meets Palomino and Legal Rose. Palomino, which was also sired by Solicitor General, will be meeting. Chellow Dene with an additional impost of 181 b, having been given 11b more than Mr. J. Trowbridge’s horse, while Legal Rose will carry an additional 121 b. Solid Effort. Cornish Note impressed when he

won the second division of the Trial Stakes at Omoto on Saturday. He lost a lot of ground at the start but overcame this handicap with a fast run over the final three furlongs and got up to beat the leader, Scene, by half a length. Cornish Note, which is trained at Upper Hutt, was sired by the Paper Money horse. Inflation, and is from Cornish Belle. Best to Date. Mr. J. Trowbridge’s maiden pair, Sir Sabre and Bannockburn, gave their best performances to date at Omoto on Saturday, when many other Omoto-trained horses failed to reveal their best form. Sir Sabre hung on for fourth'in the first division of the Trial Stakes being third most of the way, while in the Flying Handicap, Bannockburn made up a lot of ground over the final quarter to be fifth. Improved Race. Mr. J. Ryan’s Mercia’s Mystery made his first return in the final race at Omoto when he was placed third. Mercia’s Mystery showed little ability during the past two seasons, but at Reefton last month, he finished solidly. for fourth. He redeemed this promise on Saturday when he finished with as much speed as anything else in the race and defeated a speedy sort in Prana out of third money. Mercia’s Mystery was well back for most of the way, otherwise he may have earned a bigger stake. Reminders. Acceptances for the first day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting and. nominations for the Westland Racing Chib’s two-day meeting will close at 9 o’clock to-night. Omitted. Rowandale (36yds behind) was omitted from the handicaps for the Kaiata Trot on the first day’s programme of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting at Omoto on Saturday.
