REEFTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL ROLL NUMBERS INCREASE

(0.C.) REEFTON, This Day. The February report of the headmaster of the Reefton District High School, presented to the School Committee at its monthly meeting showed that the school had resumed after the Christmas vacation with 157 pupils in the primary department and 84 in the secondary department—increases of 13 and three respectively. The headmaster further reported that five pupils had passed the University Entrance examination in November, and seven the school certificate. Four senior pupils had been granted bursaries to allow attendance at post-secondary courses at Christchurch secondary schools. Max Panckhurst, a 1946 bursar, was successful after attendance at the Christchurch Boys’ High School in passing with credit high on the New Zealand list for the Junior University scholarship examination. It is intended to hold this year a school garden party. The annual swimming sports for both divisions are to be held during the month. Plans are in hand for the holding of a life-saving demonstration by the local swimming club, and all district schools are to be invited to attend. COAL COUNCIL DELAYED The members of the Coal Council, who were to have visited Reefton yesterday for a meeting with the Inangahua Mine Owners’ Association, and Miners’ Union representatives, have been delayed and they will not arrive in Reefton until to-morrow. PERSONAL Mr Anton Vogt, of Wellington, a former assistant teacher in the secondary department at. the Reefton District High School, has been appointed Dominion organiser for the United Nations Association of New Zealand. While in Reefton, Mr Vogt was associated with work for the young people, and was for a time the ’educational officer for the Reefton unit of the Air Training Corps. Archdeacon T. J. Smith (Nelson) has been visiting Reef ton. Mr K. B. Auld (Wellington) is visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs W. B. Auld, Reef ton.
