LATE NEWS ANCHOR IN PLATING

WANGANELLA SALVAGE WORK DELAYED (P.A.) WELLINGTON. This Day. A surprising discovery was made late yesterday afternoon by tne Melbourne diver, Mr. John E. Johnstone, when examining the hull of the Wanganella in the first underwater inspection since the finer was freed from Barrett's Reef. He found the bow anchor on the port side fixed into the damaged forepeak, one of the flukes being "inextricably entangled in the jagged plating. The discovery has. caused delay in the efforts to bring the Wanganella to an even keel and to move her to Clyde Quav. and it was proposed this afternoon to cut the anchor free from the hull as one of the measures to increase buoyance. Diver Johnstone will descend this afternoon with cutting gear on the task, which will probably take two hours. Otherwise the Wanganella operations have gone satisfactorily, although no details of the underwater damage will .be assessed until the line renters the floating dock. All ffie overseas salvage experts engaged will remain until the. Wanganella is docked and fully examined, and they may stay some time after for consultations on the restoration work needed. In addition to Johnstone, they are: Captain McDonald, of Melbourne, marine underwriter and surveyor for the Huddart Parker company; Mr. E. D. Eadie, of Sydney, marine superintendent of the company; and Mr. John Dilworth, consulting engineer appointed by the Salvage Society, London, to represent the British underwriters’ interests.

PLAY IN FOURS AT BOWLING TOURNAMENT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. With fine weather still continuing the third and fourth matches in the New Zealand bowling championship fours are being played to-day. A southerly wind is still a factor, but is not felt appreciably on most greens. ■ The finals of three events are to be decided on suburban greens, instead of at the' Wellington Club, as has generally been the case in the past. The singles final has been allocated to Karori, the pairs-to Hutt, and the fours to Khandallah. Officials can give no indication as to when they will be played, as so much depends upon the results of the fours. Tuesday, however,. isl generally regarded as the most likely.date. A meeting is to be held to-night with a view to forming a New Zealand Bowling Umpires’ Association, each of the existing district associations having sent representatives.
