Approximately 600 Jewish refugees are on their way to Australia in the Dutch liner Johan de Witt, according to a Government spokesman He was commenting on a report that a ship had left Marseilles with 995 Jews, who intended to settie in Australia. The spokesman said that die ship was the only vessel bringing Jews to Australia. Since December 1052 Jewish refugees had arrived in Australia. ' „ , . Dutch officials in Sydney expressed surprise at the news of the ship’s sailing, and said that the Netherlands Government had not advised them. The normal peace-time passenger capacity of the ship was 300 but she carried as many as 720 troops during the war. They admitted hearing rumours last week that the Johan de Witt and two other Dutch ships would bring refugees to Australia, but this was the first confirmation. „„ . .. The Royal Dutch Steam Navigation Company advises that the Johan de Witt will arrive in Sydney in March, and she might be followed by the Tegelberg.
