Byrd at Little America.
Three thin-sKinnea buiys, Mount Olympus, Yancey, and Merricx, have sailed north from Little America and will act as weather stations outside the formidable Ross Sea ice-pacx. Rear-Admiral Byrd and 197 men were left behind in the “tent town.’ Before Admiral Byrd evacuates the base, about March 1, a flight across the South Pole region to explore an unknown stretch between the Ross and Weddell Seas will be undertaken. One of the six survivors of the fly-ing-boat which crashed on December 30 has had both legs amputated below the knee in an operation aboard the carrier Philippine Sea.—New York, February 8. <.
