COMMERCIAL INCREASE IN LAMB SCHEDULE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 8. The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board advises that the lamb schedule in the South Island will be increased by one-eighth of a penny per pound as from Monday, February 10. The increase is accounted for by the increased wool growth. PRICES AT "COLOMBO TEA SALES COLOMBO, February 5. It is now e.xpected that as a result of the lifting of the embargo restricting the sale of tea to auctions Ceylon tea companies will be prepared to do business with Britain at a level of about 4d per lb higher than in 1946; but export duty of 38 cents per lb has to be added to that price. RISE IN LINSEED OIL PRICE The price of linseed oil, a basic material for the paint industry, has more than trebled in Britain in five months. The latest advance of £65 sterling to £2OO a ton follows the increase of £7O to £135 last September. Britain’s purchase of 100,000 tons of linseed oil from Argentina for allocation by the International Emergency Food County was confirmed last December. The-Argentine Government, according to the Financial Times has

made no secret of its determination to take advantage of the scarcity of supplies. The president of the Central Bank indicated recently that he had made a profit equivalent to £stg.49,~ 000.000 on a single operation in vegetable oil. . . World linseed oil production in 1946 has been estimated by the United States Department of Agriculture at 141,800,000 bushels, 7 per cent, more than for 1945, and 4 per cent, more than the 1935-39 average. High prices, the department states, are expected to encourage large linseed plantings this year, compared with the averages of the period 194446.
