TEST CRICKET Match Drawn: England Saves Game

ADELAIDE, February 6. . The fourth test match between England and Australia at the Adelaide Oval, was drawn. England declared at 340 for eight, wickets at the luncheon adjournment, leaving Australia 314 runs, to get to win. At stumps Australia had scored 215 for one wicket.

D. C. S. Compton, who scored 147 in England’s first innings, made 103 not out in the second innings, being the fourth batsman in test matches between England and Australia to score a century in each innings. Before the close of play, the Australian batsman, A. R. Morris, had repeated Compton’s feat. He scored 122 in the first innings and J,24 not out in the second innings. Bowlers Defied. Compton and T. G. Evans held up the Australian bowlers throughout the morning session to take the score to 340, giving England a lead of 313 runs. Compton battled 279 minutes for his century, hitting 10 fours in one of the best and most patient performances seen in first-class cricket for a long time. For dogged determination, Evans’s knock would be hard to beat. He was at the wickets for 95 minutes before opening his scoring. W. R. Hammond made an amazing move in closing the English innings. He allowed Compton and Evans to go to the wickets after lunch, and then after one ball had been bowled by R. Lindwall, the innings was closed. The only reason for his action was to gain the 10-minutes break between innings. Australia was left with 195 minutes to bat and 314 runs to score to win. Australia made no attempt to get the runs to win. Nevertheless, A. R. Morris gave a very free display of batting until the tea adjournment. With M. Harvey, he put on 99 in 90 minutes. He scored at the rate of a run a minute for the first half-hour, but faded away as Harvey began to tcike strike. The score took only 48 minutes to reach 50. Morris took 68 minutes for his first 50, hitting six fours. Interest had gone out of the game by the tea adjournment, because then it was evident the Australian batsmen were out only for practice. Morris the Star. Morris was the star of the Australian batting. Opening out strongly after tea he trounced the English bowling to record his second century for the game. He took 124 minutes for his runs, hitting 10 fours. It is a record for all tests for two players to score an individual 100 in each innings. Morris is the first Aus-

tralian to perform the feat in Australia.- He holds another record because he is the only player to break into first-class cricket with separate hundreds in each innings. He did this against Queensland for New South Wales in 1940-41. Bradman settled down quickly after a streaky start and took only 32 minutes to add 50 in his partnership with Morris. ' Australia looked to have an outside chance when runs came at a hurricane rate, but the scoring slackened later. Bradman took 68 minutes to reach his 50, hitting four fours. Scores: — 1 ENGLAND'.
