SPORTING ROYAL TOR FAVOURED FOR OMOTO TO-MORROW

Kumara To Start Coast Circuit ■ On the strength or her recent winning form on the West Coast and her prominent running in the Craven Plate at Riccarton last week the Leighon mare, Royal Tor, will probably be sent out favourite for the principal event on the Omot) caid tomorrow, the Kumara Handicap, of one mile. She is a brilliant beginner, and has previously shown her ability to run a good mile. She was on the tracks at. Omoto yesterday and impressed by her bright appearance and obvious keenness to gallop. Next hi demand may be the Trentham-trained Master Baron, Here Hine, whose form on. the West Coast. New Year circuit was most consistent, and Palomino, who was a double winner among the hacks at Riccarton. at the New Zealand Gnp

meeting. Royal Tor’s last winning performance was at the Westland meeting at Hokitika, when she easily beat Here Hine and Flying Hawk over a mile. Prior to that she had won with ease over seven furlongs at Omoto. At Riccarton on Saturday she was the leader to the straight over the seven furlongs of the Craven Plate, but faded into sixth place. The class there was much better than that opposing her to-morrow, and she is entitled to be a firm favouritd. Chellow Dene may be the better of J. S. Trowbridge’s bracket, in which he is coupled with John o’ London. Chellow Dene is a fine galloper and his strong work at Omoto yesterday indicated that he is in the right order. John o’ London would have a better chance in heavy going. Trained at Trentham. Master Baron has not been placed in his last two starts, but the Croupier gelding ran a close second to Top Shot over seven furlongs at the Waipukurau meeting in December, and later was second to Colopier over seven furlongs at the Wairarapa meeting in January. He is a good beginner. Pedantic’s best recent form was shown at Riccarton on Saturday when, under highweight conditions, the Inflation gelding ran second to Botany over nine furlongs, and was finishing strongly. It was a good performance and gives Pedantic a chance in the Kumara Handicap. Here Hine was wonderfully consistent at the New Year circuit, and at her last four starts has won once and been second three times, all in this class. The Siegfried mare is due for another victory, and this may be her opportunity, though the ease with which Royal Tor disposed of her at Hokitika in January, suggests that Royal Tor should be the better of them. Palomino's Prospects.

Wise Girl, Atreus, Dash o’ Dink, and Graeme would have to improve considerably on recent efforts to have a chance with the higherweighted division, but Palomino is a definite lightweight prospect. This Greymouth-owned mare won splendidly at Riccarton in November, but two unplaced performances at Dunedin in open company took some of the shine off her reputation. Tomorrow, however, she will be racing in much weaker company. The final summing-up may be in favour of Royal Tor, Master Baron, and Here Hine. Provision has had to be made for divisions in the Trial Stakes and the two trotting events, but a few scratchings will enable these races to be run as one event. The track, which has been very hard for some weeks, has been softened a little by the rain last night, and it should be in first-class order for to-morrow. x , Many of the leading Canterbury horsemen will be riding at the meeting, and with the fields all well filled, including 11 in the principal event and 14 in the open sprint, it should be an excellent programme. The following riding arrangements have been made at Biccar‘on lor the Kumara meeting:—A. Stokes, Grea Legend, Highland Dance > S^ * T. Wilson, Cloud Song; H. W.. Hibberd, Royal Tor; J. L.
