LIQUOR TRUST

TAKING* OVER SOUTHLAND BREWERY (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 6. The Invercargill Licensing Trust has decided to take over the Southland Brewery, either by outright purchase as a going concern or under the provisions of the Public Works Act. This action had been brought about because the original agreement between the trust and the brewery had never been completed, said the chairman of the trust (Mr. Hugh Ritchie). The brewery company will be asked in the first place to sell the brewery as a going concern, and it is probable that an agreement will be reached. The other alternative will be adopted only if negotiations for purchase fall through. If powers under the act are exercised, the trust can by law take over only the land and the buildings, but it is hot expected that there will be any difficulty in acquiring plant and machinery. “This action is fully in accordance with the trust’s policy to control the sale of liquor in Invercargill,” said Mr. Ritchie. “The trust already has a quarter share in the brewery, the capital of which is £30,000.”
