FRENCH WARSHIP
34,000 MILES STEAMING SINCE 1940 ARRIVAL AT_AUCKLAND (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 5. Streaming from the masthead far out over the ship’s side the blue, white and red pennant flown by the sloop, La Grandiere, on her arrival at Auckland this morning represented 34,000 miles of steaming since the vessel left France just before the German occupation in 1940. On arrival to-day the warship has completed 18,000 miles in a sevenmonths’ Pacific cruise. Her goodwill tour of New Zealand will cover the main ports and she is due to sail for New Caledonia on February 25. Built specially for the tropical service the sloop has a displaced tonnage of 2200, and her main armament consists of three 5.5 guns. After escaping from France the vessel was idle in a North African port for three years before serving as an escort vessel in the Atlantic. She was sent to the Pacific in 1944. The sloop returned to France for repairs in 1945 and last year joined the Far East squadron.
