COMPTON AND EVANS DEFY ■ THE BOWLERS (Rec. 3.5 p.m.) ADELAIDE, Feb. 6. Compton and Evans resumed England’s second' innings this morning with the score at 274 for eight wickets, on the final day of the fourth test match. Neither batsman looked for runs, and the first 18 minutes’ play produced only three runs. Compton took most of the bowling, and at 3 p.m. (N.Z. time) had moved the score along to 289 for eight wickets, Compton 65 not out and Evans still to score. This made England’s lead 252 runs. At 3.40 p.m., (N.Z. time) the partnership between Compton and Evans was still unbroken, with the score at 317 for eight wickets (Compton 86, Evans 2). At that stage Evans and Compton had been batting for 116 minutes.
