SPORTING FAST WORK AT OMOTO TRACK THIS MORNING

Final Gallops Prior To Kumara Meeting

Early Night, Atreus, Chellow Dene and Vonettee were four of the most attractive workers at Omoto this morning in the final gallops prior to the opening of the West Coast circuit on Saturday. The track, carrying a good, sole of grass, was in perfect order. All the fast work was done on the outside.

Cloud Song and Palomino, from R. s Wilson’s Riccarton stable, were gal- ’ loped over six furlongs early, and both worked. freely. The former is a three-year-old mare by Christopher I Robin, and she has yet to lose her maiden status. Early, Night, who ran a good fourth at Riccarton on Saturday, to Armont, Pandemonium, and Robingay, galloped over a mile, coming home his last two in 27sec. He is in first-class order and the son of Nightly and Cessation should add to his record during the circuit. On Saturday he is engaged in the Dillmans Hack Handicap, of a mile and a quarter. Atreus . worked with Highland Dance and finished about two lengths to the good over half a mile in 52sec, the last three in 39sec. Atreus hit out well. Looking Well. F. Escott has Bannockburn and Rene Leighon looking well. This morning Rene Leighon did the better of the two over three furlongs in. 39, but both galloped well. The Leighon mare is speedy and her track work, has been attractive. Escott’s other charge is San Farian, a three-year-old black mare by Medieval Knight from Miss Papa, which has been' trained for him for some time by O. Cox at Hawera. She has had a win and a third in five starts this season, the wih being recorded at her first run of the season at the Waverley meeting in October over seven furlongs on a soft track. y Vonettee, a Silver Stick mare in M. Conza’s stable, galloped well over seven furlongs, the last two in better than 26. She ran third to Early Night and Bittersweet at Reefton last month, after winning at the Hokitika meeting. Belfort, who has previously done well among the hacks at Omoto meetings, worked well over' six furlongs in 1.24. A soft track would be more to the liking of the Broiefort mare than the conditions of the past few weeks. She looks in great order.

Showed Improvement. Great Legend showed improvement in shading Sir Sabre over three furlongs in a little better than 39. The Bulandshar — Killara gelding lias been a big disappointment. He is

now being trained by A. Leckie. Sir Sabre, an Irish Lancer gelding, shows a lot of pace. Mercia’s Mystery was galloped over six furlongs, the last four in 53. His race form has not been good and he will need to show improvement to collect a stake. St. Nat, a recent addition to M. Conza’s team, was also on the track. The Theio gelding is not engaged at the Kumara meeting. Chellow Dene worked six furlongs on his own, hitting out freely, but he was shaken up only over the last two furlongs. Young John, looking little the worse for his-race at Riccarton on Saturday, did a strong working gallop over six furlongs. Among those worked on the sand were Sitology, Royal Tor, John o’ London, and Glamis Pal. Royal Tor was prominent for a long way at Riccarton on Saturday in the Craven Plate, and she was keen to gallop this morning. She will probably be one of the favourites for the Kumara Handicap, a race she won last season. Foxlight Horse.

The six-year-old Foxlight horse High Ideal was given slow work on the sand. Present intentions are to race him later on the circuit. Since he has been owned by Mr. J. S. Trowbridge, of Greymouth, he has been doing light stud duty, and among the mares he has served are Handmaid, Silver Slipper, and Night Sister. C. J. Walsh is working a two-year-old by a Hoylake colt from the Dolomite—Abrowmid mare Maybe, and the youngster shows some speed. The Hoy lake colt, .sire of the two-year-old, is out of the Valkyrian mare Valpine. Master Baron and Royal Baron, which are trained by E. Adams at Trentham, and Cornish Note and Haughty Rival (L. C. Brown, Lower Hutt) arrived in Greymouth this morning. They are quartered at Victoria Park. Prana, trained by G. G. Shaw at Riccarton, was another arrival to-day. Among the horsemen who are expected to be riding at the Kumara meeting on Saturday are C. T .Wilson, A. Stokes, J. McFarlane, C. Stokes, M. McClintock, H. Hibberd, J. L. Stove, G. Hampton.
