OPERA HOUSE—To-night: “Dillinger” and “Pistol Packin' Mama.” That “the wages of sin is death” is shown in “Dillinger,” an exciting drama which covers the criminal life of a notorious gangster. This hairraising film is showing at the Opera House, with Lawrence Tierney in the title role. The story begins with Dillinger’s first crime and progresses through jail breaks, bank robberies, a headlong escape from officers in the Wisconsin woods, a nearly fatal train robbery and the eventual ambush by the F. 8.1. as the gangster _ leader emerges from a Chicago motion pier ture theatre, betrayed to the special agents by the notorious “woman in red.” “PISTOL PACKIN’ MAMA” Loaded with gay tunes,_ sparkling romance and riotous hilarity “Pistol Packin’ Mama, a musical comedy based on the smash song hit of the same name, is showing, at the Opera House. The story deals with that of a famed singer who gets cheated out of her gambling den by a smooth city slicker. Song hits include: “Love is a Corny Third,” “I’ve Heard that Song Before,” “You Could Hear a Drop,” and the theme song “Pistol Packin’ Mama.” REGENT THEATRE — To-night; “Miss Susie Slagle’s,” with Veronica Lake, Sonny Tufts, Jean Canfield. It is about the year 1910, in an Eastern city, when five new roomers arrive at the boarding house maintained for medical students by Miss Susie Slagle (Lillian Gish). After a welcome by Dean Wingate (Roman Bohnen), the boys begin the four-year medical, coursq. Pug is determined to become a surgeon, and shows great promise, despite hi?, psychological fear of seeing people die. On Christmas Eve Bert meets Nan Rogers (Veronica Lake), a student nurse. They soon fall in love and Nan agrees to marry Bert and return with him to China, where his parents are missionaries. An epidemic of diptheria sweeps the city, and students are drafted to handle other cases while doctors combat the epidemic. The annual Easter party at Miss Susie’s ends sadly when Bert is discovered to be critically ill. Nan and Bert’s friends take turns at his bedside. Bert begins to sink during Pug’s watch and the latter, fear stricken, runs away. Bert dies, and Pug, feeling himself responsible, refuses to handle several cases to which he is assigned. It is Miss Susie who finally persuades Pug to take a case. With Nana’s assistance, Pug delivers a baby and, his fear overcome, he first gets Gret’s promise to marry, and later, he graduates Avith an appointment to the medical school.
