MURDER CASES

GRAND JURY’S GRAVE CONCERN DEATH SENTENCE ISSUE (P.A.) HAMILTON, February 4. That the grand jury viewed with grave concern the incidence of muider and attempted murder charges in the Supreme Court and felt that the restoration of capital punishment would act as a deterrent was a presentment recorded by the grand jury in the Supreme Court at Hamilton to-day. It was recommended that a return should be prepared and published of the number of murder and manslaughter trials in the eight years immediately proceeding the abolition of capital punishment in New. Zealand, with a comparison of similar charges for the eight years since capital punishment was abolished. Mr. Justice Smith said the grand jury’s presentments would be conveyed to the proper quarter.
