LEAVING POLA

b(X)() ITALIANS ARRIVE IX VENICE LONDON, February 4. The Milan correspondent of The Times .says 200 Italians from Pola who have chosen to transfer to Italy in view of the town’s probable inclusion in Jugoslavia arrived in Venice on February 3 in one of three ships put at their disposal by the Italian Government. Allied authorities estimate that more than 50 per cent, of Pola’s 30,000 inhabitants are preparing to leave their homes. All doing so have been promised lodgings and employment in Italy and also a small sum of money for their first needs. Provisional camps have been established at Venice and Ancona, and from there the settlers will be sent to various destinations in Italy. The Communist leader, Mr. Togliatti, strongly criticises the Italian Government’s encouragement of the exodus, saying that by abandoning Pola Italy had definitely renounced all claim on the city, thereby weakening her bargaining position.
