-o ... IMPORTANT BATTLE IN SHANTUNG NATIONALISTS’ ADVANCE NEW YORK, February 3. “Chinese Government troops have recaptured Tangchahg-’fU, 28 miles south oi the Communist New Fourth Army headquarters at Lih-yihs,” says the Nanking correspondent of th'e New York Times. “The Government’s success rolled back the right anchor of a loose 50-mile froht protecting Lin-yihs, and has quickened the pace of the important battle for the south of Shantung Province. “The importance of the campaign was indicated by‘the brief visit yesterday of Marshal Chiahg Kai-shek to the headquarters of General Hstieh Yueh, at SUchow, from where General Hsueh commands about 600,000 men. Government forces are also reported to be approaching Lin-yihs from the north and south-east. “Meanwhile the Communist forces have reacted by concentrating in the region of Pingtu and Lanti (north of Tsingtao) for a relief thrust. The Communists are also carrying on diversionary operations west of Suchow. Thus a new battleground has flared up, extending from the Gulf of Chihli to the west of Suchow.”
