GOLDSBOROUGH, MORT AND
COMPANY FIXED PRICES EXCEEDED MELBOURNE, Jan. 15. For trading in lucerne hay above !lie .fixed prices, Goldsbrough, Mort and Company, Ltd., were fined £7OOO in the Citv Court, Melbourne, to-day. Wilfiam Eric Hocking, partner in the firm of Fallow Products Agency, was ordered io serve seven days of a sentence of three months’ imprisonment. Recording the convictions, the Magistrate said" that it appeared that the real profiteers in the case were the growers of the lucerne hay, and that Y'ithor of the defendants bought the goods for the purpose of making excess profits. Goldsbrough, Mort and Company, Ltd., was fined £lOOO on each of seven charges. n L „ Hecking was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each of four (■iiawnw. the sentences to be conturwm," and the defendant to be released cii a good, behaviour bond after serving seven days.
The defence was that the prices order under which the charges were hid was invalid, because it did not clearlv define wholesale trading.
