SCOUT JAMBOREE

BOYS’ EFFORTS TO RAISE FUNDS ‘Can you give this boy a job?” is the question asked on the front of a folder being carried by Boy Scouts in the Westland district. In order to raise the £6OO necessary to send the three West Coast representatives to the world jamboree in France next I August all district scouts are seeking employment. The folder contains a number of detachable coupons stamped “Scout Jamboree Fund 1/-.” The idea of the system is that, when a boy is employed by any resident for odd jobs, a coupon is detached for each shilling paid to the boy. As a stimulus to the enthusiasm of the Scouts a prize of a hiker’s tent has been offered for the boy who raises the most money for the fund.

The activities of the Scouts range from lawn-cutting and gardening to cleaning silver and doing packing work for local firms during the Christmas rush. Already about £250 has been raised by various means. The three boys selected to represent Westland at the jamboree are: R. Skelton (Gladstone), P. James (Greymouth) and P. Ward (Westport). The New Zealand contingent is expected to leave about June. It. will be in the charge of Sir Joseph Ward.
