NEW BRITISH WHALER HAS SPOTTING PLANES.—The Balaena, shown in the upper picture on a trial run in Belfast Lough, is a 15,000-ton factory ship, which will “mother” 10 modern whalers during the current whaling season. The Balaena carries three amphibian Walrus aircraft, which will be used for spotting whales. One of the planes is seen on the stern. In the lower picture a spotting plane is launched by catapult from the boat deck of the ship. The Balaena also boasts one of the largest oil producing plants ever installed on a ship. It also has a refrigerating plant to freeze the parts of whale meat planned for human consumption. They will be eating whale steaks in London this winter.
